Roberto Sánchez
Classic Guitarist
Mexican guitarist Roberto Sanchez performs a wide range of works for solo guitar and chamber pieces with voice, from Renaissance repertoire by Monteverdi, to works by Ponce, Weiss, Ginastera, Chávez, and de Narvaez.
With his warm, vibrant sound and voicings—and a crisp sense of timing—Sanchez offers audiences recital programs that surprise and expand their imaginations. His programs often feature inspiring pairings of works such as 16th century Dowland with 20th century Ernst Krenek, and the strong rhythmic music of Chávez with the lyrical pieces by Aguado. He’s performed at St. Paul’s Chapel at Trinity in NYC and St. Rose of Lima Church in Brooklyn. In Mexico, he’s presented recitals at cultural centers like the Gothic Chapel at the Helénico in Mexico City, and La Tallera in Cuernavaca.
As an ensemble player, Roberto has performed with the Baroque Trio Divini Accenti works by Antonio Durán de la Mota, Giulio Caccini, and Antonio de Salazar. His nuanced approach to chamber music informs his solo recitals as well with his attention to texture and character.
Roberto has also performed a wide range of repertoire for voice and guitar, from traditional Sephardic songs of the fifteenth century, to Spanish folk songs compiled by Federico García Lorca in the 1930s. These compiled pieces describe the everyday stories of gypsies, shepherds, and bullfighters living life to the fullest. This approach, of living life fully, is what Sanchez brings to all his performances.
Having earned a Master’s degree from CUNY/Hunter College and a Bachelor’s degree from the National Conservatory of Mexico, Sanchez also offers master classes, clinics, and workshops in conjunction with his performances.
